Mr. Magate Phala
QUALIFICATIONS: Dip. Labour Law, Adv Certificate Labour Law, PostGraduate Labour Law (Cumlaude) – UJ LLB-UNISA (Pending)
Mr Phala is a founding Director of Magate Phala & Associates and a seasoned Specialist in Labour Law.
Magate Phala is an Executive Committee Member of the South African Society for Labour Law(SASLAW), Gauteng Chapter. Mr Phala also serves as a Panelist, Mediator and Arbitrator at the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC).
Mr Phala has extensive experience in chairing and initiating of complex disciplinary cases involving Senior Executives in Government Departments and State Owned Entities(SOE's). Mr Phala has developed many training material and conducted various Industrial Relations Trainings for Management, Union Shopstewards and Employees, such as Chairing and Initiating Disciplinary Hearings, Shopstewards Training etc
Very recently, Mr Phala appeared on eNCA Dstv channel 403 and Newzroom Afrika Dstv channel 405 to discuss the process of retrenchment in terms of section 189&189A of the Labour Relations Act as it has been widely reported in the media that Telkom and MassMart intend to embark on mass retrenchments which may affect over 3000 employees.
Mr. Phala also appeared on CNBC Africa Dstv channel 10 to share his views on the widely reported case between Old Mutual and its former CEO, Mr. Peter Moyo.
Mr Phala regularly writes and publishes articles on various aspects of labour law, ranging from unfair labour practices, dismissal, dispute resolution and strike law. Many of his articles have been published on www.labourguide.co.za, www.polity.org.za, www.thegremlin.co.za
